                                Healing severe wounds here
Mr. Zhang, 61 years old, runs into a journalist when he leaves LiYuan Hospital, which attaches to Tongji Medical College. He has a sanguine complexion, and unbuttons his coat, says happily to the journalist while pointing to the scar on his chest, “Look, the wound here couldn’t heal for a long time, but now it has healed, and the skin here has begun to grow again.”
In fact, Mr. Zhang was a patient suffering from heart disease. He had thought that he could get rid of the suffering after undergoing the cardiac operation. Unexpectedly, despite he recovered from the heart disease, he still suffered from some other symptoms, the osteomyelitis of the chest, and the skin around the wound tended to darken, with the phenomena of suppuration, ulcer, slough and emitting of blood and pus. Therefore, Mr. Zhang had been to more than 10 hospitals for treatment last year. He tried various ways of treatment, underwent another three operations. Each operation, he received wound-seaming, wound-cleaning, and pus-discharging, but still the wound did not close up. Hopelessly, he was ever suggested by a doctor to take off the chest bones, even if this method had been taken, the doctor could not guarantee that the wound would heal.
At last, Mr. Zhang’s long journey of looking for treatment came to an end when he found the Department of Wound, Ulcer and Bone Diseases in LiYuan Hospital. The director of the Department, Li Binghui, diagnosed the illness as osteomyelitis of the chest as the surface of the wound did not heal after operation. He also made a series of therapy for him. Ten days later, the dead skin around the wound began to have new granulation, and the wound gradually tended to be smaller a month later. Moreover, after one more month, when Mr. Zhang left the hospital, the wound on his chest had already healed, and the blood there circulated quite well. Afterwards Dr. Li said to the journalist that if Mr. Zhang came to treat earlier, the course of treatment would be shorter and the effect better.
According to Dr. Li, the Department of Wound, Ulcer and Bone Diseases adapts the “three-in-one” therapy. In recent years, the department has handled over 1000 cases in which osteomyelitis is cured and the surface of the wound close up. The patients are satisfied with the curative effects. For some cases, in the process of wound healing, the granulation grows first, then the skin. But for 80% of the cases, the skin grows directly.
According to the introduction of Dr. Li, this department initiates the “three-in-one” therapy in central China among provincial hospitals. This therapy is special for curing wound, ulcer and bone diseases without amputation and skin-grafting. Due to the successful curative effects, this department gains the Technology Achievement Progress Award of Wuhan. The therapy combines methods of treatment of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, based on which a series of medicine are developed. During the process of careful treatment, the skin around the wound grows again. This therapy involves three steps as follows:
1. allay inflammation carefully (closely) and clean the wound;
2. conduct the “bath” therapy—clean the wounded part with medicinal liquid brewed with many medicinal herbs according to proportion;
3. conduct the laser-radiation method—cover the wounded part with gauze (the gauze is soaked in medicinal liquid brewed with over 10 medicinal herbs) and then radiate the wounded part with laser.
What’s more, during the whole process of treatment, the patients take Chinese medicine and apply Chinese medicine externally; the wound is cleaned regularly.
What diseases should be treated with this therapy? Dr. Li gives an introduction while leafing through the medical report. This therapy can mainly be applied to two categories of symptoms:
1. Bone diseases, including osteomyelitis, bone tuberculosis, femoral osteonecrosis etc;
2. Wound difficult to heal, including syrinx, wound, empyrosis, and unhealed surface of a wound infected after an operation.
In addition, this therapy can also be applied to cure angitis, diabetic foot thanatosis, and venous ulcer of lower limbs. However, this therapy cannot cure the above symptoms caused by cutancum and osteocarcinoma (cancer in the bones). Dr. Li advices the patients to see the doctor in time, otherwise the wound would deteriorate and miss the best time for treatment.
